USW ratifies labor deal with Alcoa

The United Steelworkers ratified a three-year labor contract with Alcoa Corp. for workers at its US smelters.

The agreement covers about 965 employees at Warrick Operations in Indiana and Massena Operations in New York.

The agreement is effective through May 15, 2030. The contract has been ratified with 605 union workers voting yes and 131 opposing.

Massena produces aluminum sow, rod, and billet to supply the automotive, aerospace, military, construction, electronics, and packaging industries.

Warrick’s three operating smelter potlines consist of 150 pots each that make up to 156,000 metric tons annually of pure aluminum.

The master contract also sets wage and benefit terms for certain USW-represented employees at Alcoa’s Lake Charles, La., calcining facility, while reserving other provisions for separate local negotiations.

“We are pleased to have reached this outcome and appreciate the efforts of everyone involved in the negotiation and ratification process and remain focused on maintaining safe and reliable operations while serving our customers and communities,” Alcoa said in a statement.
